Biography - Lee's Life so Far

The Early Days
Lee was born in Worcester, England on 6th June 1989. His schooling took him through two primary schools - Oldbury Park, then when his family moved to the Lower Broadheath (where he would spend most of his childhood) he attended the local primary school. Even from these early starts, he showed a great interest in mathematics and ICT and even started using his ICT skills to assist teachers with lessons.

High School
At the age of 11 he attended his local High School - The Chantry High School. Here his interest and knowledge in mathematics and computer science continued to grow.
It is also where he was first introduced to technician work for events and theatre, doing both sound and lighting for events such as the annual talent show, outdoors for Sports Day and also for the school production of "Sweet Charity".
Throughout the five years he was at The Chantry, he was a librarian, taking a leadership role within this during year 10 and 11.
During his final year he was also an ICT prefect, as part of the role this involved helping other pupils develop ICT skills.
On leaving the school Lee left with 13 A* or A grade GCSEs. He was also awarded the Service to Library award and the Service to School award.

College
When he moved onto college Lee attended Worcester Sixth Form College. He took 4 subjects which he followed all the way to A-Level - Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Computing & Accounting. During his first year he also studied an extra A/S level of Critical Thinking.
When he left, Lee had achieved one A grade at A/S Level and 3 A Grades and a B Grade at A Level (520 UCAS Points), which earned him a place at The University of Bath.

The Big Step to University
In September 2007 Lee started at the University of Bath, studying Computer Science with Mathematics on a 4 year course (including a placement year).
As well as learning a huge amount from his course during the first year, he also learnt a lot from other things happening at the University. It was where he joined backstage and his enjoyment of working in theatre and live events grew exponentially.
More about the work he has done with Backstage in theatre and events can be found by visiting the "Technician" link.
At time of writing Lee will shortly be starting his second year at the University. In his second year he will be holding the position of Treasurer for Backstage and will also be a representative of the Arts Executive Committee.

Working Life
Despite being a student, where possible Lee has always tried to earn his own money, helping him learn the value of it. Although still fairly short and developing, the following list of jobs so far helps show the experience he has gained:

  • Paper Round: 2002 - 2007
Not the most exciting job in the world, however, Lee completed this weekly paper round for 5 years (since the age at which he was old enough to take a job), providing himself with a consistent income. Rain or shine, he'd be out there on a Friday evening after school delivering papers
  • Website Designer: 2003 - Today
More details of this job can be found on the "Website Designer" link. However, Lee started learning website design skills during his early years at high school, then started to use these skills to develop websites for others.
  • ICT Technician, The Chantry High School: September 2005 - August 2006
After leaving high school, Lee was offered a part time job as an ICT Technician. During his first year of college he worked 4 hours a week, with over time during school holidays.
The role was varied in it's work, depending on demand. It varied from administering user accounts, assisting students on computers, assisting and training teachers, general problem solving, software installation & new computer setup.
It allowed Lee to put the skills he'd gained into real work for the first time and develop his knowledge of networking for businesses and schools in a practical way.
  • Learning Mentor, Nord Anglia eLearning: September 2007 - Today
Lee works on two sites as a Learning Mentor for Nord Anglia eLearning:
    • Virtual-Workspace.com - As an ICT specialist mentor
    • MathsZone - A site dedicated to maths questions
The work Lee completes on these sites is highly varied. Sometimes it is answering messages with specific questions, other times it is responding to forum posts as well as starting and contributing towards discussion topics, also moderation of the public areas of the site (forums & chat rooms) and the main part is answering live questions from students through an instant messaging style chat. The questions received can vary from subject specific, general life questions as well as career and future plans. It gives Lee a chance to share his experiences with other students shortly to go through similar situations as well as develop skills himself in teaching and communication.

Other Achievements of Note
  • During the last few years of High School and whilst at College, Lee sat on Malvern Hill's Young People's Council. Whilst sat on the council he helped them set-up their website and create other publicity material for events such as Party in The Park. During the later years, lee took a major part in the running of the council and left when it finally folded in 2007
  • Lee also participated in Oracle's Thinkquest Competition.
The first team he worked with completed their entry in 2006 and were one of the first UK teams to ever complete an entry for the worldwide competition.
In 2007, he worked with another team who completed an entry which won the 19 and under category for the UK.
